EN
KONSTNÄR I VÄRLDSKLASS
KONST/UTSTÄLLNING
Jean Bolinder
Juan Cano. Hans kula flyger i en egen båge, högt
över alla andras och landar långt över alla
andras och landar långt bortom rekordflaggan.
Arketypisk bild
”The waters of the river Eufrates

AN
ARTIST OF WORLD CLASS
ART/EXHIBITION
Jean Bolinder
Quality./I once took part in a college championship for athletes.
Being a former decathlete I took part in several events and
was expected to win a lot of points for my student club. In
the shot-put I was even considered a favourite. Then a frightening
rumour started circulating: the Swedish champion, Sven Erik
Nordh, had entered the competition. He was throwing about 3
meters longer than any of us. We didn’t stand a chance.
I
come to think of that almost fifty-year-old championship as
I walk around the Galleri Opus in Borgeby during the Christmas
Salon 2005 (on view until 11th December). It’s a beautiful,
exciting exhibition of great variety which Eva-Lena Carlzon
has arranged, with a large number of talented artists. Not an
amateur or greenhorn in sight.
But… in the midst of all these competent and honourable workers
in the vineyard are the works of a genius, a world class artist:
Juan Cano. His arrow flies higher than all the others and lands
beyond the farthest boundary.
Archetype
painting
“The
waters of the river Euphrates draw back” is the title of one
of the painting by Juan Cano: a body with a face looking out
into emptiness. This kind of image can be interpreted in any
direction. It contains a world of stimulation for the mind.
Is it perhaps a corpse floating in the river as an illustration
of the aggressive actions of the U.S.A in Irak?
Maybe it is our cultural history floating by, deprived of all
life. Or is it perhaps illustrating our ability to empathise?
Who is this drowned corpse anyway, staring bluntly at us from
a river of blood? What have you done to the least of our brothers?
What concern is it of ours, the anguish of people far away?
How do we treat our immigrants? We could end up in the burning
lake for this!
Juan Cano’s painting is perhaps illustrating our condemnation,
destination hell. He is a genius, this Juan Cano. Let us realize
what a genius it is that has come to our fine, magnificent province,
which for such a long time has been dominated by Skånska
Målarskolans (Scania School of Art) skills and mediocrity!
